A Global and an Indian Perspective

Understanding and tracking scientific breakthroughs is essential for nations as they fuel innovation, enhance economic resilience and strengthen national security. These advancements directly influence the strategic sectors of a country, driving technological progress and global competitiveness. 2024 has been an extraordinary year for space exploration, marked by groundbreaking achievements from across. From revolutionary technologies to ambitious missions, these showcase humanity’s drive to explore and innovate.

The emerging space industry can capitalize on these breakthroughs by integrating advanced technologies and fostering international collaboration. This approach accelerates innovation, ensures sustainable growth and enhances the sector’s ability to compete in the rapidly evolving global space economy. As a proud supporter of space science, I am equally thrilled by the worlds remarkable strides in advancing humanity's space capabilities. The space industry achieved several remarkable milestones that have significantly advanced our understanding and capabilities in space exploration.

Global Space Breakthroughs

  1. SpaceX's Starship Booster Catch

SpaceX achieved a world-first by capturing a Starship booster mid-air using its innovative 'chopsticks' mechanism. This breakthrough could significantly lower the cost of space travel by enabling rapid reusability of rockets. However they are going to master this very soon, although in the susequent launch minutes after liftoff, mission managers called off catching the first-stage booster for unspecified reasons. It is only a matter of time.

  2. First Commercial Lunar Landing attempt by Intuitive Machines

The Nova-C lander by Intuitive Machines became the first commercial vehicle to land on the Moon, opening doors for private lunar exploration. Some of the landing gear broke upon impact and Odysseus tipped over and was resting at a 30 degree angle to the horizontal, but was still operational. [Link]

  3. NASA's Europa Clipper Mission Launch

NASA launched the Europa Clipper mission to study Jupiter’s moon Europa, aiming to explore its subsurface ocean and potential habitability.

  4. China’s Chang’e 6 Lunar Mission

Chang’e 6 landed on the Moon’s far side, collected samples and returned them to Earth, demonstrating China’s advanced capabilities in space exploration.

  5. First Commercial Spacewalk by Polaris Dawn Mission

SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn mission marked the first private spacewalk, showcasing the increasing role of commercial entities in space exploration.

  6. Self-eating rocketry

New developments on a nearly century-old concept for a ‘self-eating’ rocket engine capable of flight beyond the Earth’s atmosphere could help the UK take a bigger bite of the space industry. With both the countries UK and Ukraine working on this concept, this would revolutionize the space technology of the world. (Read More)

  7. World's first wooden satellite

The palm-sized LignoSat is tasked to demonstrate the cosmic potential of the renewable material as humans explore living in space. With timber, a material we can produce by ourselves, we will be able to build houses, live and work in space forever. (Read More)

  8. China and the United States: The Space Race

‘Outspending’ US By $200 Billion, China Not Russia Emerges The Biggest Threat To Pentagon In Space. It is China that seems to pose the real challenge to the U.S. by emerging as the world’s most dominant global space power economically, diplomatically and militarily by 2045.

  1. Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX)

India’s ISRO made a significant leap by initiating the Space Docking Experiment to test satellite docking in orbit, an essential step for satellite servicing and future human spaceflight missions.

  2. PSLV Orbital Experiment Module (POEM-4)

Launched alongwith SpaDeX, POEM-4 hosted 24 experimental payloads, showcasing India's innovation in robotics, space debris capture and microgravity studies. Facilitatation and use as of upper stage of PSLV as Orbital Experimental Module is becoming normal through the POEM platforms. Is this cost effective ?

  3. Ladakh Human Analogue Mission (LHAM)

India conducted its first human analogue mission in Ladakh, simulating Moon and Mars conditions to prepare for future interplanetary missions. Ladakh’s extreme isolation, dry climate and barren, high-altitude terrain make it ideal for simulating conditions similar to Mars and the Moon. The environment presents an opportunity for researchers to gather critical data that will support India’s Gaganyaan program and future missions.

  4. Launch of X-ray Polarimeter Satellite (XPoSat)

XPoSat, India’s first satellite dedicated to X-ray polarization, provided valuable data for the global astrophysics community. [Link]

  5. Advancements in Gaganyaan Mission

With critical milestones like astronaut training and Crew Escape System tests, India moved closer to its first human spaceflight under the Gaganyaan program.

2024 has been a transformative year for space exploration, reflecting the combined efforts of global leaders and emerging nations. India’s contributions, alongside global breakthroughs, underscore the collaborative and competitive spirit driving space exploration forward. As we look to the future, these achievements remind us that the sky is not the limit—it is just the beginning.

Into 2025, the landscape of space exploration is poised for remarkable advancements, both globally and within India.

Global Space Missions and Plans

  1. NASA's Artemis II Mission

Building upon the success of Artemis I, NASA plans to launch Artemis II, the first crewed mission in the Artemis program, aiming to orbit the Moon and return safely, setting the stage for future lunar landings. Would Elon allow this?

  2. SpaceX's Starship Orbital Flights

SpaceX is expected to conduct multiple orbital test flights (possibly 25) of its Starship spacecraft, designed for missions to the Moon, Mars and beyond, marking significant progress in reusable rocket technology. Lots of intriguing questions arise:

    1. What could its impact on the global space ecosystem be?

    2. Elon without Power could acheive so much! What could his acheivements be with Power?

    3. What would be the economic impact to the global space ecosystem?

    4. Could we see inter-continental transfer in 2025?

  3. ESA's JUICE Mission to Jupiter

The European Space Agency's Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) is set to reach Jupiter, beginning its mission to study the planet and its major moons, Ganymede, Callisto and Europa.

  4. China's Lunar Exploration

China plans to continue its lunar exploration endeavors, potentially launching the Chang'e 7 mission aimed at exploring the Moon's south pole, focusing on scientific research and resource utilization.

  5. Commercial Space Stations

Private companies like Axiom Space are expected to make strides in developing commercial space stations, with plans to launch modules that will attach to the International Space Station (ISS), paving the way for future independent orbital habitats. In a similar way are Japanese companies on their way to possibly develop a wooden house in space with possibly some radiation resistant plants? Would be a great thing !

Launching payloads to space, including satellites and equipment - Who are the top three? Natural Answer: SpaceX/USA would be anybody's Answer. But who could be the second and third? What are the statistics for 2024?

Continuing its leadership in launch frequency and payload delivery, SpaceX conducted numerous missions, deploying a variety of payloads, including Starlink satellites and commercial payloads. China maintained a steady launch schedule, deploying satellites for communication, Earth observation and scientific research. Russia continued its launch operations, delivering payloads for both domestic and international clients. India has steadily risen as a prominent player in the global space sector, driven by the ISRO and its focus on innovation, cost-effectiveness and diverse missions. In 2024, India's contributions reflect its growing influence, though it is not yet at the scale of major players like the USA (SpaceX) or China.

These missions and developments underscore a year of significant progress in space exploration, with global collaborations and national initiatives propelling humanity toward new frontiers.
