With a heavy heart and tearful eyes, I pen these words to honor the memory of my dearest philosopher, guide and a dear friend, Dr. A. Subhananda Rao, who left us on 14th February 2025 at 10:45 AM due to post-surgical complications. The void he leaves behind is immeasurable and his absence weighs deeply on my soul.

Dr. Rao was more than a stalwart in aerospace engineering. He was a beacon of wisdom, kindness and inspiration. His journey, which began in a humble village in Prakasam district, led him to extraordinary heights. After completing his Mechanical Engineering from REC Warangal, he pursued a Master’s in Aerospace Engineering at the prestigious Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, followed by a Ph.D. that further cemented his expertise.

Handwritten Profile of Dr. Rao.

Sir's professional life was marked by excellence and dedication. From his early days at DRDO in 1975 to his significant contributions at DRDL, HEMRL, GTRE, ASL and DRDO Headquarters, his fingerprints are etched in India's defense and aerospace advancements. As Director of HEMRL and later Chief Controller (Aero) at DRDO, he was instrumental in propelling India’s indigenous missile and propulsion technologies forward.

Post his illustrious DRDO career, he extended his passion for knowledge to academia, guiding young minds at VNRVJIET and later serving as Chief Consultant and Advisor at Skyroot Aerospace. His insights, clarity of thought and unwavering commitment to India’s space endeavors were invaluable.

But beyond his professional accolades, Dr. Rao was a friend like no other. His words of wisdom resonated deeply, his encouragement never wavered. His genuine care transcended every interaction. He was a mentor who believed in nurturing potential, a friend who stood steadfast in moments of doubt and a guide whose compass always pointed toward growth and integrity. His loss is deeply personal. I grieve not just for the world that has lost a brilliant scientist but for myself, having lost a cherished friend. Yet, as I navigate this sorrow, I find solace in the memories we shared, the lessons he imparted and the indelible mark he has left on my life.

Dr. A. Subhananda Rao was introduced to me by Mr. Pawan Kumar Chandana in 2021 and from that moment, he became an integral part of my life. He consistently sought my opinion on materials-related issues, especially in cases of failure analysis or design clearances. His trust in my expertise was humbling. He invited me to give talks at VNRVJIET, often saying, 'Kiran, your support for VNR students is a must. Please give talks at VNR.' Though my busy schedule prevented me from fulfilling this promise, his faith in me never wavered.

Sir, had a special fondness for my younger daughter, Aadvika. He often mentioned how bubbly, active and sharp she was, predicting a bright and successful future for her. His affection for her brought immense warmth to our family.

Sir is deeply rooted in my heart. I miss his shoulder in difficult times, where I used to ask him for suggestions and solutions. His motivating words always pacified me in times of need. His suggestions and recommendations would extend and cement my ideas much stronger. Even just before his surgery, he said, 'No need to come to the hospital, I will come back and we will talk...'
